Commercial Espresso Coffeemakers

A quick primer - Part Three - the outside

This is the bit you generally notice first of all. Hopefully after the last two pages you're now thinking "I won't be so shallow to fall for just looks". My job is done! Except.. this is the bit you are going to be working with on a daily basis, so it's as well that you both get on because the relationship will hopefully last a long time. Now to some extent here the "functionality" of the various bits is a personal judgement call. There are some questions which you have to ask but generally is is a matter of taste. The rule being try before you buy! And if the salesman won't open the machine up ....what are they trying to hide?

The Body. What sort of material is used -stainless, enamelled, plastic and is it chassis built or not? As a general rule a chassis build allows for easier access for sevicing and maintenance. How easy is it to empty/clean the drip tray? Can you warm cups on the top? How many? If you can how easy is it to keep clean? After all this do you like the design and what are the options on finish? Did I mention that it must be easy to clean?

The Group and Portafilter. The Group (the bit that sticks out at the front) into which you attach the Portafilter (the handle bit which holds the coffee). How easy is it to change the seal and shower plate? (You should be able to do this yourself without a major tool kit). How much room is underneath when the portafilter is in place. If you want to use tall takeaway cups will they fit, does it feel cramped when removing regular cups. When attaching the portafilter do you have to "fish" for a connection or does it feel comfortable. Is there an easy means of flushing the group for cleaning?

The Water Outlet. Can you use it at the same time as making coffee, or does it splutter over a distance. Little splashes of boiling water can sting. Does the valve ge hot when dispensing water? Is it possible to place a teapot underneath on the drip tray or do you have to hold it?

The Steam Lance. How easy is it to hold a jug underneath, can it be repositioned easily, is the valve easy to turn? If only one steam lance is it at the right side on the machine for you (are you left handed)? If the knob breaks or falls off can I fit a new one easily? Is there any option for fitting a cappuccinatore (a device to assist in the frothing of the milk)?

The Controls and Gauges. Do they fall easily to hand? Are ease to view. Are they self explanatory

More to follow!
